Tom Hanks Is So Good, He Got a Tony Nomination for a Play You’ve Probably Never Even Heard Of
The 2013 Tony nominations are in, and Tom Hanks managed to snag a Best Actor nod for his role in 'Lucky Guy' -- a play some of you might not even know he's in.
'Lucky Guy,' set in 1980s New York, features Hanks as real-life crime reporter Mike McAlary and marks the 'Castaway' star's Broadway debut. It was one of the last works of the late Nora Ephron, who wrote 'You've Got Mail' and 'Sleepless in Seattle' -- two other projects Hanks helped bring to life.
It may seem like getting a Tony nomination for your first play truly IS the mark of a lucky guy, but we'd chalk this one up to sheer talent. And maybe his charming nature.
Unfortunately, other A-list stars weren't so fortunate. Alec Baldwin, Bette Midler, Scarlett Johansson and even Oscar-nominated Jessica Chastain were all snubbed.
Alec was an early favorite for his turn in the embattled production of 'Orphans,' which did snag a nom for Best Revival of a Play, while Chastain lost out to her 'The Heiress' co-star Judith Ivey.
Topping the nominations was the rivalry between newcomers 'Matilda' -- an adaptation of the famed Roald Dahl book -- and Cyndi Lauper's musical 'Kinky Boots.' 'Boots' ended up with the most nods, totaling 13.
The Tony Awards air June 9 at 8PM Eastern on CBS.
