10 Lovable Things We Learned About Sofia Vergara in Harper’s Bazaar
We love Sofia Vergara.
Yeah, she's gorgeous. But even beyond that, every time we've seen her, she’s funny, endearing, modest without being fake, down-to-earth and just generally someone we’d love to spend a spa day with. Preferably with her paying at the end. (Hey, she can afford it.)
So it’s no surprise that we really enjoyed her recent interview in Harper’s Bazaar. Here are our 10 favorite takeaways.
- 1
She's Mastered the Art of Self-Deprecation
This beautiful woman is, according to the interviewer, even prettier in person than she is on TV. And yet, in the first few minutes of the sit-down, she refers to herself as “old, dirty, exhausted, annoying, crazy and psychotic.”
This is why we love her -- despite her goddess-like appearance, she always feels like one of us. And she never ever seems fake or like she’s fishing for compliments.
- 2
She Knows Fame is Fleeting
The 'Modern Family' star makes being the highest-paid woman on TV look easy, but in reality, she works her (very nice) derriere off. As she puts it, “I’m making the most of my 15 minutes.”
Meaning she’s building and maintaining the Sofia Vergara brand with huge endorsement deals and upcoming movie roles (two films are due this year and three more in 2014), just in case her star happens to fade.
- 3
She Embraces Glamour
If a guy can be a man’s man, Vergara is the epitome of a girl’s girl. She glams it up -- all day, every day.
“I do it no matter what. It’s automatic. I shower, do hair and makeup. For me, it’s like shaving," she said, laughingly adding, "I don’t believe in a natural look.”
That’s just who she is and she doesn’t apologize for it. And these days, when it seems all the cool and powerful ladies have to act like they're really just guys who don't pee standing up, it’s kind of refreshing.
- 4
She Believes Expensive Purses Are Good Investments
Some people buy stocks. Vergara buys Hermes Birkin handbags, which can retail in the six-figure range -- much to the chagrin of her conservative business manager.
But she doesn't care. She sees them as an investment.
“I tell [my 20-year-old son] Manolo, ‘If I don’t have enough money for your college this month, you have to sell the Birkins,’" she added. "These are valuable. These, Manolo can sell!”
- 5
She Doesn't Care If Her Relationship Makes You Uncomfortable
The tabloids like to talk about the rocky coupling between Vergara and fiancé Nick Loeb, but really, she says they’re in a good place.
Their relationship started with the two of them giving each other crap over dinner after the Golden Globes. “We started fighting from the beginning,” she said. So their pairing has always been fiery.
When they met, Loeb’s hair was black. “Now it’s got a lot of white in it," Sofia proudly states. "Nick says all the white hair came from me.”
- 6
She's an Unabashed Opportunist
When asked what her favorite thing about ‘Modern Family’ is, she said, “I would be lying to you if I didn’t say the success of it. For me, it has allowed me to do the things I always wanted – my endorsements.”
She's real. She's honest. And she knows how to use her fame to her advantage.
- 7
Her Career Was an Accident
Sofia was discovered on a beach at the age of 17 and ended up in a very well-known Pepsi commercial in Latin America, but she didn’t consider that a career path for her.
She went to dental school instead and didn’t start pursuing modeling work until a few years later when her marriage ended.
“I never thought I could act, or acting was for me. I’ve never been artistic," she said. "I always knew I was funny; I was the class clown, but I never thought to make money out of it or to be professional.”
- 8
She Basically IS Gloria
Perhaps acting is so fun for Vergara because she doesn’t have to go too far outside her comfort zone to do it. In fact, the producers of ‘Modern Family’ wrote the role of Gloria just for her (right down to her son named Manny).
And of course, in her down-to-earth way, Sofia knows exactly where she stands saying, “I don’t think there’s ever going to be a better part for me. But I do think – and my son and boyfriend agree with me – that I could play a crazy psychopath. I’m not joking.”
- 9
She's Happy With Herself and Her Abilities
Sofia does what she enjoys and doesn’t feel like she always has to one-up herself to stay busy.
“I think what has made me successful is that I have no need to prove anything to anyone," she explained. "There are so many actresses who stop working because they take themselves too seriously – gorgeous women, but no roles. I don’t have those insecurities.”
- 10
She Knows What's in Her Wheelhouse - And What's Not
Even though she’s doing more and more work outside of ‘Modern Family,' Sofia will stick with what she loves and knows.
“Now that I’m getting more secure with acting, I’m sure I could do other things," she mused. "But it’s not like I go to my agent and say, ‘You have to [put] me in ‘Schindler’s List 2.’’”
