Carey Mulligan Style Breakdown – What’s Right, What’s Wrong, and How to Fix It
Actress Carey Mulligan had already begun to establish herself as a style star before her role as Daisy in 'The Great Gatsby.' But given the attention she's now getting due to the film and her marriage to Marcus Mumford (frontman of the band Mumford & Sons), her every fashion move is being scrutinized -- and will be for a long time moving forward.
She takes risks, that's for sure.
Example? Pairing periwinkle suede heels with a black and cream ensemble. How's that for a pop of color and in a less-than-expected place? The textured top and pocketed skirt were already modern and elegant, but the heels take it to a whole other level.
Wearing a blazer that looks like a squared off cape, as she did with this Victoria Beckham suit at a Tiffany event, also demonstrates Mulligan's desire to be different. It's a hint of what she's capable of when dressing for events.
What's Right:
At the 2013 Met Ball, she eschewed a fussy and full gown in favor of this trim and geometric Balenciaga dress with cutouts. With her petite frame and short, golden hair, it was a knock 'em dead choice. The shoes are almost familiar, as the girl prefers a T-strap stiletto.
At last year's Met Ball, she was one of the best dressed in her silver and gold Prada with paillettes. It looked like fish scales and it was a work of art. The dress was fashion-as-art ... or art-as-fashion.
Here she was classic and chic in her dusty cornflower blue dress and a white coat. Polished, pulled together, and tailored.
This red Lanvin dress, worn to a 'Gatsby' premiere, highlighted her slight frame.
Mulligan was adorable in this Prada dress that played up her shape. It was just darling on her -- we love how the belt nips her at the waist and creates tons and tons of curves.
This black Valentino was another "wow" moment from Mulligan. Even when she goes with a simple black dress, she knows how to work it. It was fashion forward in a subtle way.
What's Wrong:
She looked messy in this satin burgundy dress, where a bra is required no matter the cup size. If she wore some shaping undergarments, this would have had a different result.
Okay, so she's a little frumpy here, with a grandma dress, chunky heels and sloppy hair. Not her best look by any means.
This summery frock, worn to Comic Con, was meh. She can do way better than this (a shorter hem would've been a good place to start).
How to Fix It:
If she keeps her LBDs in interesting cuts -- that's a good idea for all fashionistas -- she'll continue to be one to watch on red carpets and at events. The neckline of this dress knocks us dead.
This black Lanvin suit that she wore to the Grammys was also modern and fashion forward. We like that she isn't afraid to go the pantsuit route and to give it a razory edge with accessories.
We also love her with this hybrid of a pixie and a bob. Mulligan should keep her hair short, but not too short. It shows off her delicate gamine neck.
We predict big things ahead for Carey Mulligan, both on the big screen and on red carpets.
