Tina Fey + Amy Poehler’s Golden Globes Opener Proves That Yes, Virginia, Women Can Be Funny Hosts Too [VIDEO]
Golden Globes night is finally upon us, and to say we were excited to see what hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler would bring to the hosting game is a total understatement.
First and foremost, in the most appropriate of fashions, we must comment on how equally beautiful the two hosts looked: Fey in a glittery emerald dress and Poehler in a cranberry colored number. These two certainly came to impress, but they succeeded not only in the wardrobe department, but in the joke department as well.
Fey and Poehler left no actor behind as they pointed out their fellow co-workers and directors in the crowd to get a few laughs. And for women, they managed to garner more laughs and Twitter nods of approval than their Golden Globes host predecessor Ricky Gervais.
While discussing the nominees, Poehler got the first big laugh of the night when talking about 'Zero Dark Thirty' director Kathryn Bigelow: "When it comes to torture, I trust the lady who spent three years married to James Cameron."
Moving on from directors, Fey and Poehler commented on the actors in the audience, noting Anne Hathaway's portrayal of Fantine in 'Les Miserables' as one of their favorites. "I've never seen anyone alone and abandoned like that... since you were on stage with James Franco at the Oscars," said Fey, referencing Hathaway and Franco's disastrous hosting of the 2011 Academy Awards.
But the last star to get a shout-out from the hosts was a noticeably absent Meryl Streep, who was home sick. "Meryl Streep is not here tonight," Poehler said. "She has the flu, and I hear she's amaaaaazing in it."
Yes, these two are gold -- not that we're surprised or anything, but props regardless. They make funny people with ovaries look good.
