Reese Witherspoon Style Breakdown – What’s Right, What’s Wrong, + How to Fix It
While Reese Witherspoon's squeaky clean public image recently took a hit when she and hubby Jim Toth were arrested while intoxicated, it's likely that the incident will be a mere blip on her persona's radar and quickly forgotten.
One thing people usually can't forget? Her normally spot-on red carpet style. The Oscar-winning actress has always stunned at Hollywood events -- with a few clunkers sprinkled into the mix to prove that she's human.
Bangs are Witherspoon's friend and a signature part of her look. So is the color black, usually in the form of LBDs. This Miu Miu mini shows off her toned shoulders and legs.
She often opts for some color, too, like this waist-nipping, belted, bright yellow mini, paired with peep-toe ankle strap stilettos. It's all about the contrast here.
What's Right:
Witherspoon can work it with her posture. This Cushnie et Ochs LBD is a bit severe, like her heels and her "bunhead" hair, and even though it's edgier than her America's Sweetheart persona, she owns it. (Did we mention she wears a LOT of LBDs?)
This Olivier Theyskens for Nina Ricci purple gown, which she wore to the 2007 Oscars, is her best red carpet look ever. Don't even try to argue with us. The silhouette, the floaty ombre train, the color, those bangs? They all work in concert. We doubt she'll ever top this look.
Witherspoon's green and black sequined Louis Vuitton dress sparkled and so did she. It was still her in black comfort zone but with some pop.
When she goes casual, she is Gap-preppy, like in this pea coat and jeans. She's a mom of three, but never sacrifices her style.
Witherspoon's hot pink Michael Kors dress with black piping was extra fashionable thanks to the opaque black tights. What a hot mama.
When pregnant with her son Tennessee, born in September 2012, Witherspoon donned a royal blue Versace gown for Cannes and was breathtaking.
The criss-crossed back showed off back cleavage. Plus, it provided support! Multi-tasking in fashion is never a no-no.
This LBD by Miu Miu, another of her fave designers, was winter-appropriate. We love the fluttery sleeves and the red Cassadei heels. See, we told you she doses her beloved black with some color accents.
What's Wrong:
Two of her style fails involved the Oscars and the color blue. Her 2013 Louis Vuitton gown was ill-fitting and meh.
Her 2009 Oscar gown by Rodarte was experimental, ombre, cobalt blue ... and ugly.
This Yves Saint Laurent LBD is cute, if a little boxy, but the mousy brown hair is drab. She's better and brighter as a blonde.
Her fitted Monique Lhuillier gown from the 2012 White House Correspondents' Dinner flattered her baby bump, but the Old Hollywood hair was too dowdy. Given her prominent chin, she looks better when her locks frame her face.
How to Fix It:
Witherspoon should stick to blonde strands. Always. They're her signature and look good with colors or her favorite shade of black.
Another signature is pairing pops of color with her beloved black. She added pink heels and turned another LBD into a "wow" fashion moment. She was pregnant here, too, and the ruched top is flattering.
We won't get bored with her LBDs since they're a universal fashion staple. And as long as the cuts are interesting (like the bodice of this Elie Saab) and the accents and accessories are coordinated, we're all in.
