Scarlett Johansson Sues an Author for Using Her Name in His Novel
A word to all of you writers with hopes of one day being published: Unless you have a good lawyer, never invoke the name of Scarlett Johansson in your novel. She's likely to file suit if you do.
This is exactly what happened to French author Gregorie Delacourt, who's in hot water with Johansson's legal team for using the actress' name in his novel 'The First Thing We Look At.'
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Delacourt writes about a mechanic who believes a woman looking for help is Scarlett Johansson, but 60 pages later turns out to be someone who only looks like her. So even though the character's not technically Scarlett Johansson, Scarlett Johansson is suing him anyway.
This perplexed the author, who said he was "stunned" by the turn of events. Particularly because he also compared the main male protagonist to Ryan Gosling and the main character's boss to Gene Hackman. Not because he's lazy and doesn't like to describe people, but because it allows the reader to better imagine that character.
"This corresponds with the fantasies of our times. All these famous people live with us," Delacourt explained, "But I wrote a book of fiction. My character is not Scarlett Johansson." Rather he says he chose the actress because to him she is the "epitome of beauty today."
Aw, how sweet. When you write that check, remember it's Scarlett with two Ts.
