Kate Moss will celebrate her 40th birthday (Jan. 16) with Playboy's 60th anniversary. The heroin-chic poster girl will cover the magazine's 60th anniversary issue this December.

How did the waif-like Moss nab the cover of a mag that celebrates decidedly more buxom broads?

Playboy editorial director Jimmy Jellinek explained to the Los Angeles Times, "This is a massive global brand. You need a global icon in order to celebrate that -- that was the impetus. You're talking about the face of Burberry, the biggest supermodel in the world on the cover of Playboy. She's the perfect partner for us to help launch the next 60 years."

Moss will appear in a full-frontal spread that includes a lot of nudity, bunny ears and a "come hither smile." Hoo boy!

Hugh Hefner himself is pleased with the decision, despite Moss not looking like any of his 'Girls Next Door.' "She's a worldwide celebrity and iconic and crosses the boundaries from sexual imagery to upscale modeling," he said. "It's a natural for us."

We bet he means "natural" in more ways than one.
