Zooey Deschanel Style Breakdown — What’s Right, What’s Wrong + How to Fix It
Zooey Deschanel is the queen of quirk when it comes to fashion and style. She is known for her signature bangs, rendered unrecognizable without 'em. She favors flirty, girly dresses and isn't afraid to be frilly when the red carpet occasion calls for it.
The singer and actress also repeatedly pairs opaque black tights and heels with knee-length, femme dresses. That's as much of a style signature as her face-framing fringe.
She is also known for her cute and kitschy manicures, like this themed design she sported at the Golden Globes.
Did we mention those thick bangs? Oh right, we did. They are not bluntly cut -- the fringe is heavy, something she clarified in a recent magazine interview.
Don't forget those ice-blue eyes, either! That's another standout physical feature for Ms. D.
What's Right:
Deschanel's body is pretty much a dress form for girlish dresses, like this black and white striped Kate Spade frock. The "Vivien" had a bodice bow cutout that was as cute as Zooey herself.
Those adorbs manis are very "right now," as textured nail art is ever-popular. Deschanel always rocks a cute and unpredictable mani. Her digits are art, as evidenced by the sparkly, lemon yellow look below.
This precious, leaf print, hot pink Nina Ricci dress was a little quirky, extra cute and paired with Deschanel's signature thick, dark tights. No bare legs or self-tanner overdosing here.
Her crimson Oscar de la Renta gown popped against her porcelain skin at the Golden Globes. She was prettier than a rose.
What's Wrong:
She swooped her bangs to the side and donned a seersucker (!!!) dress by Tommy Hilfiger for the 2013 Met Gala, the fashion event of the year. The dress felt too casual, in terms of fabric, and we didn't know this was Zooey Deschanel until someone told us. She was unrecognizable and that's NEVER a good thing.
Her sheer and long-sleeved Valentino from the Oscars was sad. The color didn't pop, and she didn't look happy wearing it. This was like couture frontierswoman. Notice her cocked head pose? That's another Deschanel red carpet hallmark.
This skirt and sequined top felt too cutesy. Yes, there is such a thing.
How to Fix It:
This look -- a girly-shaped, belted, black and white print Naaem Kahn dress and black tights -- is always a Zooey "do." A "dooey," perhaps?
Quirky manis, like this TV design -- easily a reference to her role on TV's 'The New Girl' -- are also a "do" at all times, since they allow Deschanel to accessorize in a unique way without being flashy or junky.
This ice-blue, frothy Reem Acra confection was heavenly. Deschanel was a cherub on earth. She usually chooses so wisely on red carpets and doesn't shy away from ball gowns. Her stylist deserves a raise.
Deschanel does go a little longer with hems and does garner edge with accessories from time to time. This fitted Preen dress was juxtaposed with a mint green Chanel bag, and the overall presentation was faboo. Chanel for Deschanel? Where is the endorsement already? It's about time, Coco!
