Kim Kardashian Style Breakdown: What’s Right, What’s Wrong, and How to Fix It
Love her or hate her, the famous-for-being-famous savvy marketing queen and reality star known as Kim Kardashian has an army of stylists at her disposal and a wardrobe that can inspire envy. She has a distinct style -- and our opinion on such is split right down the middle.
Kardashian has her signatures: slicked back ponytails, pouty nude-glossed lips and spider-leg eyelash extensions. It's often a bit too much, but even when she's overdoing it, she always looks pulled together -- even if it took her about six hours to get her there.
Her style screams HIGH MAINTENANCE and she often looks like if you put her in a hot bath, she'd melt and go right down the drain (one can hope, anyway).
What's Right:
Kimmy K. pulls off prints, like leopard, and thigh-high leather boots like nobody's business.
She also isn't afraid to try a bold print, especially when it shows off her infamous assets.
She won't shy away from a geometric statement shoulder, either. Although we do hate that white-rimmed eye makeup; it's too severe.
She's also unafraid of bold colors in unforgiving fabrics. You may remember that her frenemy Paris Hilton once compared KK's ass to a big plastic bag filled with cottage cheese -- but Kim clearly isn't afraid of taking out the trash.
Volume doesn't scare Kim either, be it big hair or big fabric. And she's an Olympic-level accessorizer -- few can pair an amazing bag or leopard booties with basic black quite like she can.
While she once regularly wore jeans, you pretty much never see her in them these days. Her version of "casual" is a pair of painted-on leather leggings.
Here, she dresses up those leggings with a wide white cape. Again, those are two of her best style hallmarks: spicing up a casual outfit, and an ability to play with volume.
What's Wrong:
Oh, the excess. Her eyelashes are overkill, her lips look plumped via artificial means, and she routinely ODs on bronzer.
Her tightly slicked signature high ponytails make her face seem too taut as well, giving her look an overall rigidity.
KK is clearly proud of her curves (and good on her for that), but she often dresses them poorly, as in this gold and cobalt number. It's too tight and too low-cut for a busty woman and gives her boobs the look of cantaloupe halves.
Back in the "early days," she showed a propensity for overdoing the whole matchy-matchy thing -- and the overly-inflated lips.
The short gold textured dress below reveals one of her rare accessorizing missteps.
In case you weren't sure what we meant by "rigid," take a look at this dress. All the elements are in place. A white dress with interesting black piping, a topknot hairdo -- and board-like posture.
How To Fix It:
Some of Kim's best magazine covers have been those where her makeup was scrubbed off and she looked fresh, so maybe she should put a moratorium on the spider lashes already. She just looks overcooked too often, and we can't help buy wonder why she doesn't go the soft route more often.
Compare that to the look below -- while it's fashionable, it's evidence of what's right and wrong.
Here you see Kardashian showing off her signatures without all the cardboard hardness. She's casual in jeans but dresses them up with a leather topper, a loose shirt, fashion-forward booties, a statement necklace and a huge clutch. Her loose waves make her seem touchable and approachable rather than wax-figurine-like. This is an older photo, but she'd be well-served to pull some of that style into the way she looks today.
