Boiled down to its essence, 'The Bachelorette' is a program about beautiful, lumbering nitwits vying for the attention of a beautiful, vapid woman. Oftentimes that means trying to impress her by sheer swag, but one past contestant is saying that many go to extremes and turn to steroids to get an edge.

Jesse Csincsak, winner of the DeAnna Pappas season, gave the scoop to RadarOnline, saying, “I know that a lot of guys do steroids before they’ll go on the show. [The producers] don’t tell you to. They just don’t test for it.”

Csincsak says that the ABC program producers test for a litany of drugs before letting the hunks onscreen, but that they turn a blind eye to steroid usage.

"[The showrunners are] drug testing you for illegal drugs like cocaine and stuff like that,” Jesse said, probably in a Shakespearean accent.  “They take a urine sample. They take a blood sample."

And Dr. Sean Nordt, Director of Toxicology in the Emergency Medicine Department at the University of Southern California, says that most steroids are difficult to detect if you're not looking for them.

“If you test for the wrong [steroids], you won’t find it,” Nordt said, adding that these tests also need to be administered in a short time frame.

Meanwhile, a 'Bachelorette' insider says contestants aren't told they're being testing for steroids, saying, “I can assure you that they don’t [test for them]. I mean, why would they be concerned about someone taking steroids?”

But if the purpose of the show is looking for true love, why would you need steroids? Shouldn't these men win hearts based on their intellect, wit and charm?

Aside from being a naively hilarious question, maybe that's not the purpose of the show anyway. Maybe it's just about seeing shirtless beefcakes beating the crap out of each other -- at least according to Jesse, who says producers probably enjoy the effects that the 'roids produce, getting cast members "angry, boozed up, and ready to fight.”

If there's a takeaway here, it's that anyone hoping to snag a bachelorette should be an angry, shallow person with questionable genitalia and a lust for cameras.
