Whether caused by surgery, accidents or other mishaps, most of us have at least one scar by the time we reach adulthood -- and celebrities are no different. Some stars are famous for their marks, while others just pretend they aren't there. Here are the stories of 10 of them (and whenever possible, we've included a clip of the celeb themselves talking about their scar).

Tina Fey: Left Cheek

She rarely discusses it, but as a child, Fey was attacked by a stranger who slashed the left side of her face. She's not overly conscious about the resulting scar, but when she's filming scenes, directors still often choose to shoot her from the right side regardless.

Kaley Cuoco: Left Leg

The 'Big Bang Theory' star is an experienced equestrian, but back in 2010, she wound up with a broken leg after she fell while riding. She was injured so badly that amputation was a possibility, but thankfully, surgeons were able to save the leg by implanting two metal rods into it.

Harrison Ford: Chin

A nasty car accident at the age of 20 left Ford with a familiar scar on his chin -- one that's been explained by his on-screen characters in a variety of ways (for example, in 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,' he supposedly cut his chin with a whip as a child).

Catherine Zeta-Jones: Throat

As a kid, the 'Chicago' actress had a tracheotomy thanks to an illness that made it hard for her to breathe. "Makeup artists are always trying to cover it up, but I don't want to hide it," she once told PEOPLE of the now barely-noticeable mark. "I wouldn't be here today if I didn't have this scar."

Padma Lakshmi: Right Arm

A 1984 car accident shattered the 'Top Chef' host's upper right arm, and the surgery she had left her with a seven-inch scar.

Seal: Face

The pop star's signature facial scars were caused by a teenage bout with a condition called discoid lupus erythematosus (or DLE), a type of lupus affecting only the skin.

Michael K. Williams: Forehead to Cheek

More than two decades ago, 'The Wire' and 'Boardwalk Empire' star was out celebrating his 25th birthday with friends when he wound up in a bar fight, during which he sustained a life-threatening slice across his face and neck with a razor.

Queen Latifah: Forehead

The two-inch scar just under the new talk show host's hairline has been there since she tripped and hit her head during a childhood game of tag. "I'd never cover it up," she once told In Style magazine. "It gives my face character."

Prince William: Forehead

The royal's "Harry Potter scar," as he calls it, came about in a truly aristocratic way: a golfing mishap. (What, you thought he'd been in a bar brawl?) His wife, the lovely Kate Middleton, also has a scar -- one on her scalp from a childhood operation.

Joaquin Phoenix: Upper Lip

The eccentric actor's scar was once thought to be the result of corrective cleft palate surgery in childhood, but the truth is that he was born with the scar -- it's called a "microform cleft," which is a mild form of a cleft lip.
