Oooohhh yeah! A biopic about the legendary "Macho Man" Randy Savage is officially in the works. Deadline reported that Kenan Thompson, of Saturday Night Live fame, is set to produce the film through his production company, Artists for Artists.

The film, simply titled Macho, aims to tell the story of one of professional wrestling's most iconic and charismatic figures.

A 'Macho' Production Team

Kenan Thompson and his partner Johnny Ryan Jr. are spearheading the project. The duo are lifelong fans of Savage, with Thompson even having worked with the legend on a Nickelodeon promo back in 1999. The script for the film has a deeply personal connection, as it was co-written by Savage's late brother, Lanny Poffo (who passed away in February 2023), and Eric Shapiro.

Joining Thompson and Ryan Jr. as producers is Paul Coy Allen of Midas Entertainment Group. The executive producer team includes Jonathon Davino, Cory Litwin, Boris Shvarts, and Monica Weber.

The Unmistakable Legacy of a Legend

"Macho Man" Randy Savage was a pop culture icon whose larger-than-life persona defined an era of professional wrestling for both WWE and WCW. His legendary career came to a tragic end when he passed away from a sudden heart attack in May 2011 at just 58 years old. Savage was posthumously inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2015. While his life has been covered in documentaries, Macho will be the first narrative feature film to tell his incredible story.

What the Producers Are Saying

The team behind the film expressed their excitement for the project. Johnny Ryan Jr. told Deadline, "Macho man Randy Savage was the greatest showman of all time and the OG bad boy of entertainment... Lanny and Eric did a great job capturing this story and the crazy 80s wrestling era that turnt wrestling figures into life long pop culture icons.”

Kenan Thompson added his own enthusiastic statement, saying, “Beyond excited for this one!! Macho Man is hands down one of the greatest of all time and can’t wait to bring his story to the screen!!!”

This project presents a fantastic opportunity to introduce the madness and magnetism of the "Macho Man" to a whole new generation of fans.

10 Wrestlers Who Landed Roles in Superhero Movies

Who on earth didn't mark out when Macho Man Randy Savage suddenly appeared as the badass 'Bonesaw' in Spiderman? "Bonesaw is ready!!!"

Superhero movies were practically built for wrestling's most legendary performers. It's true that Hulk Hogan was unable to translate his explosive in-ring success into box office gold, but performers like Jesse Ventura and Rowdy Roddy Piper did prove that wrestlers could carry major roles in action films like Predator and They Live!

At the turn of the millennium, as the Marvel and DC Universes birthed some of the most profitable film franchises of all time, wrestlers like Dave Bautista and The Rock would nab starring roles as some of cinema's most powerful heroes. In turn, long forgotten pro wrestlers would experience career rejuvenations thanks to their god-given size and ability to connect with an audience.

Whether it be 'Drax' in the multi-billion dollar franchise Guardians of the Galaxy or 'Claw' in a Hong Kong superhero sequel you've probably never heard of, we're still popping whenever a WWE favorite makes an appearance on the silver screen.
