Prince Hates Madonna, Maroon 5, Old People and Note-Taking, But Loves Black Female Lawyers

Prince on Billboard

You already knew Prince was kind of an adorable weirdo, but specific oddities about the Purple One popped up in a recent Billboard interview that will either leave you scratching your head, wanting to high five him, rolling your eyes — or any combination thereof.

The TLDR version: Prince hates Madonna, old people, cover songs and when reporters take notes or record things. But he totally loves his all-black, all-female legal team. So there’s that.

Prince has a new song, so he’s doing a little press. Gawker revealed some fun tidbits from his Billboard sit-down, but it’s unclear if they’re even entirely accurate since the writer had to work purely from memory — he wasn’t allowed to record the interview or jot things down during the session.

“Some in the past have taken my voice and sold it,” Prince told Billboard. He’d rather risk being completely misquoted because even note-taking is impolite. He explained, “That would be just like texting.”

Speaking of selling, how does he feel about Madonna now? Remember when they dated and then she called him a troll back in 1994? Not a fan, especially not after Warner Bros. records ended his contract in a pretty ugly way.

“It was always about Madonna,” he griped. “She was getting paid, but at the same time we were selling more records and selling out concerts on multiple nights.”

One particular Prince quirk that’s a little hypocritical? At 54 years old, Prince refuses to speak with old people. And not because of the old people smell, either.

“I don’t talk to old people,” he said. “They try to find ways to stay static. Young folks are the ones with the ideas and constantly moving forward.”

Another adorably hypocritical moment? When the writer asked Prince what he thought of Maroon 5‘s cover of ‘Kiss,’ he got sassy. “Why do we need to hear another cover of a song that someone else did?” he snapped. “Art is about building a new foundation, not just laying something on top of what’s already there.”

When the author pointed out that Prince covers songs live as well, he tried explaining it all away.

“I do pay performance royalties on others’ songs I perform live, but I’m not recording these songs and putting them up for sale.”

We guess he forgot about the covers on his 1996 album ‘Emancipation.’ But dude, he’s freakin’ Prince. He gets a pass.

One thing he does like? His attorneys. He warned the writer against some unknown future wrongs: “I have a team of female black lawyers who keep an eye on transgressions. And you know they’re sharp.”
