Miss Utah Tries to Fix the Gender Gap, Stumbles Her Way Into Pageant Q&A History [VIDEO]

Pageants are typically superficial popularity contests that never end up promoting the inner beauty about which they pretend to care.

But every once in a while, a pageant contestant comes along who shatters those expectations and proves to us that brains and beauty are not mutually exclusive. And at Miss USA 2013, that was Miss Utah.

During the pageant Q&A session, finalist Marissa Powell, 21, was asked about the gender wage gap in America and what it says about our society. “I think we can relate this back to education,” Powell responded, before stammering out the rest of her answer.

“And how we are continuing to try to strive to … figure out how to create jobs right now. That is the biggest problem right now, and I think especially the men are seen as leaders of this and so we need to figure out how to create education better so we can solve this problem.”

In the history of pageantry, truly great answers — like, such as this one — are hard to come by. That’s why Marissa Powell shouldn’t be upset that she was third runner-up this weekend. Now that she’s gone viral, she needs to use this as a springboard straight into the Utah State House, then Congress and then the White House.
