For all his insistence on dragging out his divorce from Kim Kardashian, Kris Humphries can't even drag out his relationship with his own attorney.

The NBA star's divorce lawyer, Marshall Waller, has asked to leave the case.

TMZ reports that Waller filed documents removing himself from the case, citing "irreconcilable differences" with his client, which may or may not include evolutionary ones, as he sort of looks like an adorable missing link.

Waller filed the paperwork today (Feb. 14, because he's a romantic) ... one day before they were supposed to appear in court for a hearing to schedule their trial.

Last week, Waller staunchly defended Humphries from Kardashian and her own lawyer, Laura Wasser, saying that Kardashian was using her spawn with Kanye West to unfairly accelerate the trial before he and Humphries could adequately prepare.

In spite of everything, if Humphries' goal was to stall as long as possible, this may work in his favor. The snafu can -- and probably will -- delay the judge's decision on a trial date.

Humphries is currently waiting for his out of state lawyer, Lee Hutton, to get sponsored to rep him in California.

Here's hoping Hutton likes reality TV, because he's going to have to sift through a whole lot of it to prove his fraud case.
